I poked around for a few days, read this thread and came up with the following:
- Browse to "[installdir]\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\resource\UI"
- Open HudAchievementFloatingNumber.Res
- Set visible to "0"
- Save

Apparently that did the job.
The end result is here. I probably won't do this sort of thing again, though this ended up in receiving a free copy of Left4Dead2.
