Doris Rollins Heald

Rollins, Heald, Doris Arlene (Beane)

SKOWHEGAN -- Doris went home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Oct. 6, with her family around her. She was at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan. She bravely battled cancer for almost four years and she was an inspiration to everyone who knew and cared for her throughout this time.

She was born in Moscow, the daughter of Eugene and Julia (Smith) Beane and was educated in Moscow and Bingham schools.

Doris worked many years at Quimby Veneer Mill in Bingham while helping on a dairy farm with her husband and family, worked at Maine Spinning Mill in Skowhegan and retired from Deveraux Foundation in Devon, Pa.

After retiring, she and her husband, Eldred A. Heald, moved to Bingham and enjoyed their home and became members of the Bingham Grange, Somerset Pomona, State and National Grange and were very active in the senior citizens dinners and activities. So many will remember her cooking in these events.

Her favorite hobbies were cooking, playing cards, doing puzzles and traveling.

She was very privileged to see a lot of places with the young men at the Deveraux Foundation for whom she and Eldred were house parents, and she and a friend, Ruth, went to Norway. With another friend, Dottie, she went to Alaska, and with her daughter and sister-in-law went on several Christian retreats at Word of Life in New York.

Survivors include her son, Alton E. Rollins and wife, Jean, of Norridgewock; a daughter, Carla Rollins Mayhew and husband, James L. Mayhew Jr., of Waterville; a stepdaughter, Diana M. Ward and husband, John, of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepdaughter-in-law, Amy Heald of Madison; three grandchildren, James L. Mayhew III, Thorndike Sydney Mayhew of Waterville and Tiffani Randall of Pittsfield; three stepgrandchildren, Andrew Heald, Don French and Cynthia Moody; seven great-grandchildren; and many stepgreat-grandchildren. She had a very special aunt, Alice Betit; very special sister-in-law, Alma "Billie" Beane of Waterville; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and a very beloved cat, Casper.

Doris was predeceased by her parents; two husbands; three infant babies; her three brothers, William S. Beane, Eugene H. Beane and Philip G. Beane; sister-in-laws, Alice Beane and Emily Beane; and stepson Avery Heald.

She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Skowhegan.

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 6-8 p.m. at Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Centenary United Methodist Church on Dr. Mann Road, Skowhegan, with Rev. George Hodgkins officiating. Burial will be at the family lot in Union Cemetery in Moscow.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Alice M. Beane Scholarship Fund in Bingham in care of Donald Beane, 16 Hunnewell St., Moscow, ME 04920.

Her family wishes to thank everyone who cared for her at Redington-Fairview General Hospital, especially Dr. Gomaz and Dr. Leno Thomas, all at the oncology department, Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, Woodland Assisted Living, HealthReach and Hospice in Waterville. You are all angels. And we don't want to forget her very dear neighbors at Woodland Park, Skowhegan, who will always be remembered on your outreach to her when we weren't there. God bless you all!
